In 2011 the Vale & Downland Museum, Wantage, needed to have a new extension built, resulting in the loss of some of the garden and outside sitting area. At the same time, the NFWI offered grants to WIs to fund community garden projects. After consultation with the Museum, Wantage WI successfully applied for a grant of £500 to buy new troughs, planters, compost and plants for the Museum courtyards and front garden. A team of about 7 Wantage WI volunteers planted 24 lavender plants in the front garden and filled the containers in time for the opening of the new extension by Ed Vaizey, MP in 2012. The Garden commemorates the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. |
